In Japanese, the word "saru" literally means monkey. Historically, monkeys were believed to be creatures capable of conveying messages between humans and gods. Priests would communicate with monkeys (or monkey statues) in underground cemeteries to converse with the deities. Unfortunately, over time, the image of the monkey deteriorated, equating it to that of a manipulator, traitor, or thief.
Nowadays, monkeys symbolize a free way of thinking, as well as having fun and letting go of worries.
