 In traditional beliefs, they are the embodiment of sin, regret, violence, and karmic retribution. They often appear as torturers in hellscapes, torturing the souls of those condemned in life. Their presence serves as a reminder of the consequences of evil deeds.
 In some versions of the legend, Oni are not entirely evil. They are sometimes guardians of hell (Jigoku), servants of the god Enma, ruler of the underworld. Their role is similar to that of European angels of judgment—they dispense justice, separating good from evil.
