Long ago, in a Japanese village, a boy was born with a contorted face and pursed lips, as if blowing air. Although clumsy, he possessed an extraordinary talent—he could precisely direct the air, which proved valuable to blacksmiths and potters.
One day, a local blacksmith hired him to keep the fire burning in his forge. The boy controlled the flames so well that the workshop gained fame and was believed to be blessed by the Fire Gods.
Over time, people began to depict his image in the form of a mask, which they wore during festivals, believing it brought good luck and protected against evil spirits. Today, the Hyottoko mask is a symbol of happiness, humor, and traditional Japanese dances.
